Wetland for birds with international appeal

Thanks to its abundance of water, wide‑open spaces and tranquillity, the area acts like a magnet for birds. For this reason, Nationaal Park De Peel is internationally recognised as a wetland. Around one hundred bird species breed here, and countless migratory birds stop by for shorter or longer periods in spring and autumn.
In the open areas you’ll find many marsh, heath and water birds, such as little grebe, black‑necked grebe, bittern, teal, garganey, marsh harrier, water rail, nightjar, bluethroat and stonechat. So be sure to pack your binoculars.

Nationaal Park De Peel

The current National Park De Groote Peel is transitioning into Nationaal Park De Peel. This national park focuses on three large nature cores: the European protected areas De Groote Peel, the Deurnese Peel and the Mariapeel. In the surrounding landscape you’ll find the remaining peat areas of Heitrak and ’t Zinkske, the Natura 2000 area De Bult, Klotterpeel, Stippelberg and the Heidsche Peel. Around these lie agricultural reclamation landscapes and villages, each with its own character. Here, nature, legends and innovation blend into one landscape.
